Cuban Sandwich Pizza

Cuban Sandwich Pizza

“So we fix our eyes not what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. . . ” 2 Corinthians 4:18

Cuban Sandwich “Pizza” is a combination of the traditional Cuban Sandwich and French Bread Pizza.  This is an easy but fulfilling meal that would be perfect for a quick dinner or lunch.

Living in South Florida, we have a plethora of latin restaurants and food trucks that’s at our fingertips.  One of my favorites is Cuban cuisine.  I love the baskets of buttery slices of cuban bread that are brought to your table.  And one of my favorite dishes is the Lechon Asado.  Pork shoulder and onion marinated in a citrus mojo and then slow roasted and served with black beans and rice and fried sweet plantains.

Another favorite of mine is the Roja Vieja, a flank steak braised in a liquid with peppers, onions and spanish olives.  Just thinking about these dishes makes me want to go to our neighborhood Cuban Restaurant.

But a favorite handheld is the Cuban Sandwich.  Pretty much on all the menus.  It’s the perfect sandwich for lunch or a light dinner.

What is a Cuban Sandwich?

A classic Cuban Sandwich is roast pork layered with ham and swiss cheese, sliced pickles and mustard on Cuban bread and then pressed and toasted to make an easy to hold flat sandwich.

This sandwich is usually served with fried plantains or chips.

When I make my own Cuban Sandwich, I use a mayonnaise/mustard blend instead of just mustard because I like the creaminess it gives the sandwich.

Why a Pizza?

A usual quick dinner at our house is French Bread Pizza.  Slice french bread in half and top with your favorite toppings and bake.

Although a Cuban Sandwich isn’t hard to make it takes some time with buttering the bread and grilling it with a press to flatten it.  Also, unless you have a large pan, it takes awhile to cook all the sandwiches.

As a pizza, you are saving the time of buttering both sides of the bread and you can bake all of them at one time, which saves you a lot of time.

What Do I Need to Make a Cuban Sandwich “Pizza”?

You will need a baking sheet, parchment paper, serrated knife, spoon, knife, small mixing bowl, mixing spoon, measuring cup and spoon and the following ingredients:

Mama Fawn’s Tips . . .

  •  If you cannot not find Cuban Bread, French bread is a good substitute.
  • You can replace the roasted pork for shaved deli roasted spanish pork, if you want a short cut.
  • I make this recipe when I have roasted pork leftovers but you can find already cooked roasted pork in the refrigerator section of the grocery store.
  • This recipe uses shaved, sweet deli ham for this recipe, but using leftover ham from dinner would be fantastic.  I would cube it or have it sliced very thin.
  • You can find the garlic spread in the refrigerated aisle where the butter and margarines are located.  Sometimes you can also find it in your bakery where they have pizza dough.
  • If you want your pizza cheesier, then feel free to add more cheese.  Sounds delicious to me.  😀
  • My preference is the sliced pickles baked with the pizza because it tastes more authentic to me but you can add them afterwards or omit them totally if you wish.  My husband always orders his cuban without pickles.
  • The mayo/mustard blend can be omitted but it really adds a zing to the pizza.  Also, have it on the side and each person can decide if they want it .
