Spaghetti Pie

Spaghetti Pie

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. . .” Romans 12:9

Spaghetti Pie is a combination of lasagne and pizza and is the perfect midweek meal for the family.  A combination of marinara, pasta, pizza toppings and lots of cheese; what’s not to like about it!

Spaghetti Pie Ingredients

I have been making Spaghetti Pie since my early days of marriage.  It’s so easy and actually a little fun to make. (for those out there that don’t think cooking is a chore)  😉  Also the kiddos will really like eating it.

What actually is Spaghetti Pie?

Spaghetti Pie is a casserole layered with so many goodies.  It’s one of those dishes that you can definitely make it your own.  See Mama Fawn’s Tip for lots of ideas for this casserole.

Since this casserole is called a ‘pie’, using a ten inch pie plate would be ideal for this recipe but since I don’t bake a lot of pies, I used a 10 inch casserole dish.  Either way, it makes a great dish.

Add a salad and a loaf of fresh bread and Spaghetti Pie will be your family’s new favorite dinner. What’s even better, Spaghetti Pie can be made in advance.  Prepare the casserole and instead of baking, freeze it.  When you are ready, thaw it out the night before or that morning in the refrigerator and it will be ready for the oven the next day.

Mama Fawn’s Tips. . .

  • When cooking the spaghetti, make sure it’s in a pot of boiling, salted water.
  • Instead of ground beef, you can use ground turkey or Italian sausage or a combination of ground meats.
  • When you add the beaten eggs to the hot pasta, stir fast and well so you won’t get any scrambled eggs in the casserole.
  • Grated parmesan works better than shredded parmesan for the crust but you can use it, if you desire.
  • Feel free to substitute ricotta for the cottage cheese, if you prefer.
  • If you do not like mushrooms, you can omit them or add any other pizza veggie you like; ex. Peppers, olives, onions.
  • If using ground turkey, add a little olive oil to the mushrooms so they can cook down easily.
  • Make sure you let the pie set before cutting so you get nice slices.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. pkg spaghetti

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • ½ cup grated parmesan

  • 2 eggs, well beaten

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 (8 oz) fresh mushrooms (sliced)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1(28 oz) marinara sauce

  • 1 cup cottage cheese

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella

  • 12-14 sliced pepperoni

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cook the spaghetti according to the package directions in salted water; drain.
  • Stir in the butter and grated parmesan into the hot spaghetti. Add the beaten eggs, stirring well. Spoon spaghetti mixture into a greased 10 inch dish or pie plate. Use the spoon to shape the spaghetti into the dish making a crust. Bake uncovered for 10 minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  • Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Once the ground beef is no longer pink, drain the fat and return to the skillet. Add the sliced mushrooms and salt and cook for 5 minutes. Mix in the marinara sauce and stir well.
  • Spread the cottage cheese evenly over the baked spaghetti. Top with the meat and mushroom sauce. Add the pepperoni and sprinkle the mozzarella over the pie.
  • Bake uncovered for about 25 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
  • Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
